Although being goal-oriented make us feel more motivated at the beggining of prepation for the exam period coming ahead, taking care first about our well-being shows more promising performances on preparation period in general and on exam day in specific.
Exam preparation is an intense and often stressful. While the focus is typically on finishing the material twice or more, the toll it takes on mental health often is underestimated.
However, several studies have shed light on the psychological impact of exam preparation and offer insights into managing this stress effectively. In this blog, we’ll explore the research surrounding mental health during exams and provide actionable tips to help you navigate this challenging period.
Test anxiety is one of the most common challenges faced by students (25-40%) during exam preparation, which can negatively correlate with academic performance, as it impairs working memory, leads to procrastination even during exam, self-doubt, headaches and even nausea.
I won't continue to talk about negative things we experience prior to exam, I wiil focus more on how to be better performers, so let us dive in:
Plan better and be realistic, set realistic goals and schedule your breaks! YES include breaks in your study schedule...our brain needs break to let the information sink in
If you procrastinate often use pomodoro technique to help you achieve your goals (study for 25 min, rest for 5min..) if you master than you can gradually increase your "Focused" time...
Sleep is CRUCIAL for memory consolidation, cognitive function, and reduces anxiety. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep every day, SPECIALLY day prior to your exam
Studying for the USMLE exams takes few months or even a year of prepartion, so establish a sleep routine that will benefit you in the future, I will say it again specialy during exam period.
Incorporate physical activity - during breaks get up from your desk, walk around and stretch. go for a 20 minute daily walks to destress and ventilate and hit the gym at least twice weekly
During dedicated period once a week allow your self to relax, rewind and take a half day off, visit family and friends and enjoy being present.
Exams are important, but so is your mental health. By integrating strategies and maintaining a balanced approach, you can navigate this period with resilience and focus. Remember, a well-rested and mentally healthy mind is your greatest asset during exams. You’re not alone in this journey, and with the right support and strategies, success is within reach.
